Who can guess what this is?

(My siblings should stay silent, as they will all know what they are looking at in this picture.)  This is something useful to my father in one of his hobbies, and believe it or not, it is not entirely obsolete.

  1. The first thing that popped into my head was a telegraph, but I really have no clue...

  2. My train of thought went to "SOS"...took a minute to find "Morse code" back in the recesses of my brain. So, a Morse code transmitter, and is that what a telegraph really is?

Anyway, thank God for email and cell phones!

  3. You two are good! Yes this is a Morse code key. Ham radio operators still use Morse code, and I grew up hearing the sounds of it wafting up through the vents from the basement up to my bedroom, as my dad spent time on his radio at night. A telegraph operator would have used a key like this. And yes, I enjoyed Skyping with my son and husband tonight on my dad's computer--much better than a contact via radio with Morse code would have been!
